Dogs have feelings just like people—they can be happy, sad, nervous, excited, or simply want to be left alone. Just like us, their moods can change depending on what’s going on around them. The good news is that dogs are always giving us clues about how they feel, if we know how to read the signs.

One of the easiest ways to tell how a dog is feeling is by looking at their tail. A tail that’s tucked tightly between the legs usually means the dog is scared or nervous. On the other hand, a wagging tail isn’t always a sign that the dog is happy or friendly. It simply means the dog is alert and ready to interact—but that interaction could be good or bad.

There are a few exceptions, though. A tail wagging in a wide circle usually means the dog is genuinely happy and friendly. But a stiff, straight tail—especially one held high—can be a sign the dog is tense or unsure. A tucked tail almost always means fear.

Understanding a dog’s body language—especially their tail—can help keep you safe. Learning how to greet a dog calmly and respectfully is the best way to avoid getting bitten. When in doubt, give the dog space and let them come to you. Being aware of a dog’s feelings helps us be kind, respectful, and safe around our furry friends.
