A veterinary team will likely consist of a Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) who is most often referred to as a veterinarian.
What is a DVM?
A DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, commonly known as a veterinarian) is able to diagnose medical problems in animals, prescribe medications, as well as perform surgery on animals. DVM’s are able to perform all the tasks an RVM can perform. To become a DVM, you must do a minimum of 2 years of an undergraduate degree (Bachelors degree) and then four more years of university to obtain a DVM degree.
What is a RVT?
A RVT (Registered Veterinary Technologist) is able to perform many tasks including: anesthesia, radiology, as well as surgical assistance under the supervision of a veterinarian. RVTs in some areas of the world are known as “vet nurses”. To become an RVT, you must complete tow years of a post-secondary accredited veterinary technician program.
It is very important that Veterinarians and Veterinary Technologists work together in order to ensure the highest standards of care for their patients!
