When summer hits, it’s important to keep our dogs safe, and there are a number of ways we can do this.

Exercise wisely!

Try to schedule your walks for the cooler hours of the day and remember to bring water. Remember- concrete can get scorching hot throughout the day!

Keep them cool and hydrated!

If your dogs like to spend most of their day outside, remember they should have fresh water at all times and a shady area or access back inside the house when they need a break from the sun. A fun tip: Freeze their favourite food or treats as a way for them to cool down as well!

Beware of bugs!

Many disease spreading bugs like to come out to play as the weather gets warm, so you’ll want to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines and parasite controls if you can. Consider visiting your vet in the early summer to assess your dog’s risk factors and ensure that they will be well protected for your summer plans.

Travel Safety!

If you plan on traveling with your dog, remember to keep any information up to date on their ID tags, and never leave a dog alone in a parked vehicle as it can quickly overheat and become deadly, even if they are in the shade or with the windows cracked, it’s a huge risk.

Know the signs of heatstroke!

When a dog overheats, it can quickly become catastrophic. Some signs of heat stroke include: Rapid and heavy breathing, excessive drooling, dry and sticky gums, seizures, and collapse. If you do notice a dog with these signs, move them to a cool and well-ventilated area and begin to gently cool them by offering ice chips, cool water, or blowing cool air from a fan. Seek help by contacting your nearest Veterinarian for further assistance.
