There are a wide variety of dog breeds found around the world, and different breeds excel at specific jobs due to their unique qualities. Because of different genetic tendencies, dogs can differ greatly in behavior, needs, and abilities.

The importance of researching a dog breed before adding a dog to a family is stressed, as not every dog is suited to every lifestyle or situation. Making an informed choice supports a stronger human–animal bond and leads to better outcomes for both the dog and the people involved.

With proper care and training, many dogs can become excellent companions. Many dogs are mixed breeds, often combining traits from multiple breeds, which can make them well-suited for certain jobs or ideal family pets. The breeds discussed represent only a small selection, as there are hundreds of dog breeds recognized worldwide.
