An animal control pole, also called a snare pole, rabies pole, or catch pole, is a humane way to capture and restrain both domestic and wild animals. The device includes a rope or cable attached to a pole, whereby the rope is threaded through a catch mechanism. Control poles are used by animal control agencies, humane societies, police officers, veterinarians, and various other professionals to handle unowned or unattended animals. Catch poles come in numerous
lengths and wire sizes, and they are often adjustable.

While it is common to use catch poles to capture stray dogs and wildlife, they should never be
used on cats. Cats are able to maneuver themselves within the loop which may be harmful to
their necks and ineffective- a net is recommended instead. Control poles are a valuable tool to
protect yourself from being bitten by unvaccinated or disease-carrying animals, as well as to
avoid contamination by biological waste materials.

How to use an Animal Control Pole

  1. Approach the animal slowly while holding the pole at your side or behind you with the cable loop hanging loosely. Avoid holding the pole in a threatening position.
  2. Use both hands on the pole to slip the loop over the animals head until the loop is placed fully around the neck. Pull the release cord with one hand to tighten the loop until it is snug without being too tight. Never use a control pole to choke an animal or force them into submission.
  3. Keep both hands slightly apart on the pole and slowly guide the animal to where you would like to go. If they do not readily move ahead, try walking directly behind them to cue them to walk forwards.
  4. Never drag, yank, or lift a dog with a control pole. Direct them into a cage or enclosure, loosen the cord, and carefully remove the control pole.
