With wildfires, landslides and flash floods, you may only be given fifteen minutes notice to evacuate your home in the case of an emergency. Do you have everything your pets need?
What to do before
- Build a kit with everything your pets need (see kit list below)
- have ID tags with current phone numbers on your pets
- Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets inside. Know a safe place where you can take your pets to be cared for (make a list of pet friendly hotels)
- Up-to-date vaccination is usually required for pets to stay in boarding facilities
- Have a buddy system with neighbors who may not have access to transport and make a plan to evacuate together
- Introduce pets to vehicles and crates with food to ensure quick loading
Build a simple go kit
- Bottled water
- 1-2 weeks of pet food
- Food/Water dish
- Kennels/Leashes
- Blankets
- Vaccination records
- Cat Litter/Dog poop bags
- Up-to-date photos in case of separation
My pet escaped, or wasn’t able to evacuate with me… What do I do?
- Leave out large tubs of water
- Leave out bowls of food for at least seven days
- Leave a note on your door with contact information and what pets live there
- If you can’t bring your pet, leave them inside with food and water. Seperate dogs and cats.
- Do not crate them.
- Leave toilet seats up
