What is Rabies?

Rabies is a sickness that is deadly to animals and people. You can catch it from bites or scratches from wild or sick animals! Common animals that spread rabies are dogs, foxes, bats, and racoons. Remember: Don’t touch wild animals or dogs you don’t know!

How to avoid Dog Bites

  1. Stand like a tree. Freeze! Stop moving. Hold your hands at your side, or folded in front! Stand strong like a tree trunk with feet rooted on the ground. Look down, and do not stare the dog in the eyes. Wait quiet and still for the dog to go away.
  2. Be Calm and Quiet. No running or screaming or waving arms. Dogs chase movement, so stay still!
  3. Give Dogs Space. Never approach a dog that is alone, tied up, or eating. Ask your family before petting dogs.

What to do if a dog bites you

  1. Tell an adult immediately
  2. Wash the bite with soap and water
  3. Report the bite to a public health official

How to keep dogs healthy

  1. Keep pets vaccinated
  2. Don’t let pets roam freely
  3. Teach friends adn family about dog safety rules

The big things to remember:

  1. Stay calm like a tree
  2. Ask adults for help
  3. Respect all animals
  4. Your safety matters!
