Hilary Johnstone

The land, and the lakes, of northern Saskatchewan inform my art, and my life. I spend as much time as possible in the bush, skiing in the winter and canoeing in the summer. We have 2 pet dogs who come with me to hike and ski in the bush behind our house every day.

This art work shows Odin running over the melting snow pack in April, looking up at the ravens that are playing with him. Our dogs, despite being free to run around our acre, are always so excited to leave the yard and go in the bush with me to run and follow scents. They exemplify pure joy. Joy in their physicality, in our companionship, and in nature.

I took an MFA in painting and an Education degree. I taught in Stanley Mission for a few years, then moved to La Ronge, where I started a family and taught art at NORTEP. I was initially a painter, but switched to fabric as my medium in 2008. My fabric collages start out as a sketch on paper. I then choose fabrics and use a collage technique to piece, sew and quilt the image.
